Among game genres, horror is often one of the most popular. Although some players don’t enjoy the strong emotions that the style provides, there is no denying that it has a huge title.

What’s most interesting is how the generational leap in video games has allowed for realistic and even more terrifying experiences. If you were born in the early 90s, you experienced this firsthand. PlayStation 1 games like Silent Hill caused the worst nightmares, despite their outdated graphics.

10 Moondown

If you enjoyed the films The Lighthouse and Midsummer, you’ll be pleased to know that Moondown is very similar in its quirky narrative. The first-person title is in black and white, which takes the player back to his hometown after the death of his grandfather.

However, you will discover an ancient curse on your family and you will have to find a way to break it. Its whimsical setting, set in 1920s Switzerland, is one of its main strengths, combining legends and local folklore for a memorable and mysterious experience.

With elements such as memory loss, otherworldly magic, and terrifying creature chases, Amnesia: Rebirth delivers a tense experience with a good dose of science fiction.

The player takes on the role of Tassi, a French explorer lost in a mysterious desert. It has mechanics like losing your sanity where it makes you question whether what is happening is reality or madness. With an intriguing narrative and disturbing monsters, the game will deliver good scares and moments of despair.

Many games make you feel scared and desperate, but few can make the player question everything in front of them like layers of dread. Gothic horror casts you in the role of a mad artist in an empty mansion whose goal is to create his masterpiece.

The way the game taps into the protagonist’s sanity and conveys it to the player is genius, with doors and corridors constantly changing, causing confusion and fear. But the big twist comes when you finally realize what’s going on and what material your character is using to create his artwork.

If you’re a fan of horror movies like Friday the 13th and own a PlayStation, you’ll definitely be interested in Until Dawn. He takes a group of teenagers on vacation to a secluded house in the mountains during a blizzard.

Trouble begins when they discover that a mysterious creature is lurking out there ready to kill them, and it’s up to the player to keep them alive. With multiple endings, possibilities, twists, grotesque deaths and scares, Until Dawn is a fun game to play with your girlfriend for an interactive movie experience.

SOMA is one of the most disturbing experiences you’ll find in video games right now. Although the stealth sections are a bit awkward, it deals with themes of conscience and what makes you who you are, in a scary way.

It takes the player to an underwater base called PATHOS II, which is full of hacked machines with a dark secret. Comparisons to Bioschock are inevitable, but SOMA is more traumatic and extremely shocking from an ethical point of view, especially in that it uses elements of metaphysics to induce nightmares.

5 Alan Wake Remastered

Alan Wake is a horror game unlike any other on this list. It does not rely on excessive violence or scares, but instead focuses on delivering an eerie atmosphere, supernatural elements, and a tense narrative, heavily influenced by Stephen King’s literary work.

Alan Wake is a writer suffering from writer’s block and decides to vacation in Bright Falls with his wife. After arriving at the scene, he realizes that something is wrong and mysterious events occur, such as the disappearance of his companion. Alan then realizes that one of his books, which he doesn’t remember writing, is coming to life and that there is a macabre secret behind it all.

Outlast takes place in a strange place that no one wanted to investigate: a disused asylum targeted by many strange things. So your character decides to go there, in the middle of nowhere, at night to find out what’s going on there. The result is terrifying and full of disturbing events.

Your character cannot fight or use weapons, only running and hiding. It’s also possible to use the camcorder’s night vision to see in the dark, but it has limited battery life and you’ll sometimes find yourself desperate in complete darkness with what you can’t see. If you’re having an anxiety attack, I recommend playing together to relieve tension and having someone yell with you when the going gets tough.

3 evil within 2

Evil Within came from the mind of the brilliant Shinji Mikami, creator of Resident Evil. His approach is different and deals with the psyche, bringing a world that is a real nightmare, full of grotesque creatures and desperate moments.

Using elements of psychological horror, it plays with the player and begins to interfere with reality and illusion, resulting in terrifying events that leave the adrenaline pumping. If you miss the old Resident Evil, The Evil Within 2 will put a smile on your face.

2 Resident Evil 7

Resident Evil 6 was considered a disaster by most fans, despite its hilarious moments. This forced Capcom to reinvent the franchise, modernizing all of its elements, introducing a new character, and significantly changing the traditional gameplay, disaster-ready formula.

Fortunately, the game was successful and surprised everyone. With elements from movies like The Exorcist and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Resident Evil 7 takes the player to the Baker Mansion in the swamps of Louisiana, and the result is one of the best horror experiences in recent years, bar none. A memorable protagonist, Ethan, who gets more attention in the sequel called Village.

The Alien franchise has become iconic in film and video games, even though most of the games are of questionable quality. After years of disappointing fans, here comes Alien: Isolation, an extremely tense title that forces the player to survive a terrifying xenomorph.

You take on the role of the legendary Ripley’s daughter Amanda on an abandoned space station looking for clues about her mother’s whereabouts. The problem is that you are not alone, but in the company of a terrifying xenomorph. The desperate atmosphere and artificial intelligence of the creature make the experience memorable and full of tense moments, extremely faithful to the original work.
