In a statement, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) gave more details about the agreement with the Gran Turismo series. Representatives of the association commented that the end of the partnership was not final and noted that further discussions will take place to evaluate possible innovations.
According to Frederic Bertrand, director of the FIA’s innovative sports activities department, the split between the institution and the Sony franchise has been mutually clarified between the parties. Gran Turismo head Kazunori Yamauchi agreed to suspend negotiations until the GT7 platform was more stable.
This initiative comes after the latest title launched with a number of issues. In the early days, the game’s servers were offline for more than 24 hours, hurting players all over the planet. Additionally, other bugs, crashes, and bad lobby experiences have been reported in the community forums.
For Motorsport Games, the difficulty we had at that point is that they weren’t necessarily ready to support the live event as much as we wanted, because of GT7 and everything. So we agreed with them to work with Assetto Corsa. It is also easier for us because it is more open to many countries.
Fortunately, motorsport’s governing body has confirmed that the relationship with Polyphony Digital is “not over”, even after the announcement of a partnership between the FIA and Assetto Corsa Competizione. Bertrand also anticipated a meeting in Salzburg, Austria, scheduled for next week, and plans to renew the partnership in early 2023 if Gran Turismo 7 is in good shape.
I will send you my representatives and if we feel you are ready we will move forward again. And then we’ll probably have another project at the beginning of the first quarter of next year with Gran Turismo. It’s difficult at the moment, but they’ve been very honest with us and told us that they need to focus on that first.
The FIA announced that it is already working with Gran Turismo on other projects and commented on the long-term support for the esport, with new content as a service and inclusive simulations. However, details about them have not been released.
