The Callisto Protocol trailer introduces the mutation mechanic

Enemies will be able to transform into stronger versions if not eliminated

Developer Striking Distance Studios CEO Glenn Schofield took to the stage at Gamescom 2022 Opening Night Live this Tuesday (23) to present New trailer for The Callisto Protocol. The video shows off a new mechanic called Mutation, where enemies create tentacles from destroyed body parts and transform into stronger versions if not defeated quickly. Additionally, the trailer ends with a new brutal death for the protagonist.

The trailer is divided into two parts; In the first, we followed some gameplay captured on the new generation console. begining 1m20 mark from the video above We see Jacob Lee, the main character, headbutt the monster. At this point, a series of tentacles emerge from the head and initiate the mutation mechanic. Soon the enemy will be resurrected and transformed into a stronger version.

In the second part of the video, in a long section of the gameplay, we see that the hero cannot avoid the propeller. In a violent sequence, Lee propels it into the air and splits in half. The trailer ends with the character’s crumpled body falling to the ground.

Callisto’s protocol will die a brutal death

One of the most discussed points during the game’s reveal is how the death programmed for the hero will be violent and full of envy, which was evident from the game’s first trailer.

Striking Distance Studios designer Ben Walker revealed this Callisto’s protocol will have a balance between melee combat and weapon use. “We really lean into the survival side of things. Our general combat tone is a violent tone, right? You do whatever it takes to get through (monsters and situations) […] Almost half of our combat is melee, which means you have to be smart about how you use your bullets,” Walker said.

To launch the game, the developer has partnered with AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.0 (FSR 2.0) and the game will not feature DLSS at launch. Callisto Protocol will be released on December 2, 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series S|X, and PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store.
