Steam launches Sunday with discounts on fraudulent, ghostly and metroidvania games

Between the various headings we leave our references

The event has not only in-game promotions, but also content that (attempts) to explain the main differences between Rogelika and Rogelit, as well as the origins of Sulslaik and Metroidvania. While the last two are easier to understand, the first two need more explanation.

Rogue was a game released for the PC in 1980 that featured randomly generated maps, with numerous searches and constant deaths. According to the consensus among the developers who participated in the International Roguelike Development Conference in 2008, Roguelike should have the following features presented in Rogue:

– Continues after advertising –

  • Generate a random map
  • Permanent death
  • Torque-based combat
  • Grid-based movement
  • A complexity that allows for multiple solutions
  • Non-modal (all actions can be performed at any time)
  • resource management
  • Hack and Slash style battle

Rogelite, on the other hand, is almost fraudulent in that it contains some of these elements. Soulslike comes from the FromSoftware Souls franchise (Demon’s Souls and Dark Souls), which are not ironically sold. Finally, metroidvania, which is the portfolio of the Metroid and Castlevania franchise, as the name suggests. These games feature large non-linear maps that facilitate research, platform elements, and fast combat.

The games listed above are personal recommendations based on the titles on sale as a few others like Dark Souls, Blasphemous, Unworthy, Code Vein, by the way, are not cheap.
