Sony was Activision/Blizzard’s biggest source of revenue in 2020

In other years, Sony competes with Apple and Google for space, with Microsoft reaching a maximum of 4th position

Sony is responsible for generating one of Activision/Blizzard’s biggest revenue streams. In 2020, the company that owns the console PlayStation represented 17% of the distributor’s total revenue, about 1.37 billion USD. In the same year, Apple took second place with 15%, Google was third with 14%, and Microsoft was fourth with 11%.

The information isn’t new, but it was further analyzed by analyst Daniel Ahmed, who noted Sony’s importance to Activision/Blizzard’s revenue. Another interesting detail is the power of mobile for financial results. Mobile games such as Candy Crush and Call of Duty Mobile are a significant source of revenue for Activision. We can see this by combining the percentages of Google and Apple, which have accounted for about 30% of the company’s revenue over the past three years.

In 2021, Sony was in 2nd place, and Microsoft did not reach 10%.

During 2021, Sony dropped to No. 2 with 15% revenue. Apple and Google shared the first position with 17% each. With the addition of the two companies, we have 34% of our revenue from the Play Store and the Apple Store. On the other hand, in 2021, Microsoft would not even account for 10% of Activision/Blizzard’s revenue.

We can draw some conclusions from this data. First, it is undeniable Franchises like Call of Duty make more money on PlayStation consoles than Xbox. Another important point is the strength of mobile as a profit option, which is not surprising. Considering the money carried by some games like Genshin Impact. The data revealed by Daniel Ahmed also reinforces recent comments from Xbox CEO Phil Spencer. according to him One of Activision/Blizzard’s main acquisition targets is mobile gaming.

On the other hand, it’s also clear that Sony doesn’t want to lose the Call of Duty franchise as one of the games on the platform, which could happen in the next few years. That is, of course, unless the UK decides to block Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision/Blizzard.
