Rumor: FTC ‘likely’ to file suit against Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard

More revelations about Microsoft Xbox’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard have surfaced in recent hours, with Politico reporting that the US Federal Trade Commission “probably” Microsoft is being sued for trying to buy Activision Blizzard.

According to rumors, The process is not yet guaranteed – Apparently the FTC still No lawyer has met – But the commission is reportedly “skeptical” of current arguments in favor of continuing the union.

In terms of any kind of FTC chronology – that’s out now as well. Any such lawsuit may already be filed next monthIf the FTC decides to go that route. Microsoft expects the deal to close by June 2023, though any lawsuits would pose a major obstacle to moving forward.

As for the FTC’s reasoning here, the report doesn’t go into detail. However, the US Trade Commission appears to be concerned that the merger between Xbox and Activision Blizzard could give Microsoft an “unfair incentive” in the video game market.

Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier also weighed in on the report. While Schreier says he can’t support what Politico is saying, the reporter admits that “the landscape is different” now with the FTC, suggesting that a lawsuit may be more likely in the current climate.

While we’ve seen a lot of resistance to this deal since day one, especially from Sony, which owns PlayStation, this appears to be the first time there’s been genuine concern about the deal’s success. For now, we’ll have to wait and see how things unfold in the coming months.
