He says he lacks the “ability” to develop these games on Xbox
The mobile platform is the biggest in the world when it comes to games and this was one of the reasons why Microsoft acquired Activision Blizzard. In an interview with Bloomberg, Phil Spencer said the company doesn’t have much “creative opportunity” to develop mobile games.
“When we think about what we can do today and where we want to go, the biggest gaming platform on the planet is mobile. One and a half billion people play on mobile,” said the Xbox chief.
“And I think, regrettably, and like Microsoft, that’s not a place where we have a native platform. In games that come from console and PC, we don’t have a lot of creativity that led us to make successful mobile games.” Spencer.
He comments that he’s been in this business for a long time, he knows who can and can’t build what Microsoft needs. “One thing about the video game space is that if you’ve been in it for a long time, you know most of the creators, so you know who might be a good choice for what we’re trying to do. doing.”
Mobile and PC are Microsoft’s focus
Phil Spencer emphasizes that Activision Blizzard’s ability to create games for mobile and PC is one of the main reasons for the merger of the companies.
“We really started discussions, at least forcefully, about Activision Blizzard talking about Blizzard’s capabilities on mobile and PC. Those were the two things that really piqued our interest,” Spencer explains.
Activision Blizzard is the owner of the mobile hit Candy Crush developed by King’s studio. The game, along with Farm Heroes, also mobile and from the same developer, was responsible for making more than $680 million in the second quarter of this year, surpassing the numbers that Diablo Immortal and Call of Duty Mobile did together.
More than $830 million was generated directly from these securities during this period. This is equivalent to 51% of the money collected by the company, meaning that the largest part of Activision Blizzard’s profit comes from mobile games.
Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is still undergoing approval from various regulatory bodies around the world. Only Saudi Arabia approved the purchase.
