Nintendo: Developing new games and franchise remakes ‘realistically difficult’

You can’t go out and answer everything people ask for.

Imagine seeing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, or any other Nintendo exclusive game fans have been asking for. According to Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa, it’s not that easy. He says it’s “realistically difficult” to develop new titles and remakes and keep up with all the fan requests.

At the annual shareholder meeting, Nintendo’s president was asked whether the company would consider working on new games or remakes of franchises that have been put on hold, such as F-Zero and Wario Land. “It’s realistically difficult to develop new titles and remakes, including sequels, for all the Nintendo games people are asking for, but we’re very grateful for the expectations our fans have for our games,” Furukawa replies (translated by VGC).

Nintendo senior executive Shinya Takahashi gave an example of this type of situation and also confirmed that they are always thinking about creating new games from the company’s franchises. “We are always looking at how to develop new titles and remakes that many players can enjoy,” Takahashi said.

“During the 79th AGM in 2019, we were asked if there were plans for a remake of the Famicom (NES) Detective Club series, and at the time, it just so happens that we were planning a remake. For example, where we were already actively developing. This type of title”, adds the executive manager.

“We can’t say if there are plans for a future remake of any particular game, but during development we’re always thinking of different opportunities that players can enjoy,” says Shina Takahashi.

If there’s one thing gamers have seen these days, it’s remakes and remasters, or even reboots. Sometimes it’s just a “look”, or even the same game created from scratch with current technologies, and also something that is reimagined to change some of the basic concepts of the original work.

Nintendo is very careful not to announce things like this “left and right”, but rumors indicate that a remake of Metroid Prime is currently in development and should be released later this year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the original. A title released for the GameCube in 2022.
