‘GTA’: Information helps fight damage from leaks – 27/09/2022 – Tec

Secrecy is often the rule in the gaming industry. Big developers keep information about games in development under lock and key, sometimes even if they are working on a new title or not.

However, it is common for some sensitive information to be leaked to the public. It’s rare for these leaks to have the dimension that happened last week with the franchise’s new title “GTA” (“Grand Theft Auto”).

On the 18th, user “teapotuberhacker” posted 90 videos of the development of the next game in the series on the franchise’s fan forum, which is considered one of the biggest leaks in the history of the gaming industry. .

The images that have come to the public confirm the information already published by Bloomberg about the new game. Among them, the title will have two protagonists and will be located in Vice City, a version of the city of Miami in the “GTA” world.

That day, Rockstar, the game’s developer, confirmed that the images were real and the result of “illegal access” to their servers. Since then, Take-Two, which owns Rockstar, has worked hard to prevent the distribution of stolen footage.

Claiming copyright infringement, Take-Two forced YouTube and other major content distributors to remove the leaked videos. In addition, according to the website Kotaku, Rockstar has limited comments on its social media to make it harder for the images to spread.

Even the FBI got into the story. Authorities’ main suspicion is that the images were obtained by a hacking group called “Lapsus$,” which was behind other hacks, including a digital attack on Uber. According to journalist Matthew KeysA 17-year-old boy was arrested last Friday (23) in London on suspicion of belonging to a group and involved in the leak.

Since this is an illegal intrusion, the measures taken by the authorities and the company’s efforts to contain the damage are justified. But even small leaks in which there is no apparent wrongdoing lead to drastic measures from developers.

  • This was the case, for example, of Crystal Dynamics, which filed a copyright lawsuit in August against journalist Colin Moriarty’s Sacred Symbols podcast after he read the script for a game from the “Tomb Raider” series that the company is developing but not yet. was released

  • At the risk of getting the podcast banned from Patreon (a crowdfunding site for which he received compensation from fans of his show), the journalist chose to delete the part of the episode where he read the script of the game.

There are reasons – both competitive and market-related – that the industry has chosen such an opaque approach to game development. One of them has been confirmed after the first leaked images of the new “GTA” hit the Internet.

Some fans were disappointed with the quality of the game’s graphics (which are still in development, worth noting) and took to social media to complain that the game was “ugly”. In response, dozens of developers posted images comparing the graphics of their games to the final product, showing that the criticism of the next “GTA” was meaningless and moved away from the misconception of the development stages of the video game.

  • Among the developers who decided to show a little behind the scenes of the creation of the game are: Kurt Margenauco-director of “The Last of Us – Part 2” and other games in the “Uncharted” series; Paul Ehret“Control” designer; Kevin ShotoDirector of the TV series “Tail of the Plague”; Jeff Perez, screenwriter of “Kurduli Sea”; and Peter HansenCreator of “Power Wash Simulator”.

It’s through transparency (rather than more blocks and restrictions) that these developers have helped Rockstar avoid one of the negative consequences of leaking new “GTA” videos. As counterintuitive as it may seem, in an industry that spends a lot of time and money trying to keep everything secret, more transparency and information seems to be an effective weapon against leaks.
