Elon Musk says Tesla Cars will eventually have Steam integration

Tesla CEO Elon Musk responded to a tweet saying the electric car company could integrate with Steam, a digital game distribution platform for Windows, macOS and Linux PCs.

Tesla currently offers several games through the integrated Tesla Arcade, such as Cyberpunk 2077, Cat Quest, The Witcher 3, Cuphead, The Battle of Polytopia, Sonic the Hedgehog 1 and Missile Command. However, some don’t work on all cars, like Cyberpunk 2077 and The Witcher on the new Model S and Model X.

It’s also unclear whether Tesla customers will be able to buy games on Steam inside their cars, and whether the company will support all games on the platform. “We’re generally working on making Steam games work on Tesla, not specific titles. The former is obviously something we’ll have to work on in the long term,” Musk tweeted in February of this year.

This isn’t the first time Tesla has taken a gamble on its infotainment system. In June of last year, the company launched the advanced graphics of the game Cyberpunk 2077 on the Tesla Model S Plaid when presenting the model to the public.

Musk briefly showed off the car’s console, and to demonstrate the system’s capabilities, he accurately ran an RPG game at 60 fps. During the demo, the entrepreneur compared the graphics capabilities of the car game to those of the PlayStation 5.

For Musk, this will be crucial in attracting consumers to buy self-driving cars, which are expected to hit the streets in the near future.

“If you think about a future where the car will often be on autopilot or in fully autonomous driving mode, fun will become more and more important,” he said at the time.
