The announcement was made by Remedy Entertainment CEO Tero Virtala, who said: “I am now proud to announce that the biggest budget Control game, also known as Codename Heron, is Control 2, the full sequel to our award-winning Control game.” The project is still in the conceptual phase and, according to franchise director Mikael Kasurinen, the sequel will be a new leap into the unknown, an unexpected journey. He also thanked the audience for the success of the game and said that Control 2 is the most exciting project he has ever worked on.

The game will be developed on Remedy Entertainment’s proprietary Northlight engine, the same engine as Control, Quantum Break and CrossFire X Story Mode. The technology includes next-generation physics, global and particle lighting, as well as realistic 3D-scanned characters played by actors. According to Ram and Rafi Galante, co-CEOs of Digtal Bros Group (parent company of 505 Games), Control was the biggest investment the company has ever made and has become a much-loved game with over 3 million copies sold.

In Control, players control the character Jessie Fadden, a woman with paranormal powers who discovers a mysterious government building called the “Federal Department of Control”. In this place, unexplained objects and people with unusual powers are kept for study, and Jesse believes that this is where his brother Dylan was taken after an unusual event in his childhood.

However, upon entering the building, he is chosen as the new “Director” of the department and must face a menacing force called “The Noise”. At the end of the first game, Jesse finds his brother, but he ends up in a coma and there’s still a lot to learn about the noise.

The multiplayer game of the Control series is also developed by a separate team of Remedy Entertainment called “Vanguard” codenamed “Condor”. This other title will be a spin-off set in the same universe as Control, but aimed at co-op multiplayer. There is also no release estimate for the project at this time.
