Capcom Fighting Collection: Worth it?

In recent years, many publishers have been placing bets on remakes and remasters, and the Capcom Fighting Collection is no different. And aimed at an audience obsessed with martial arts, the collection will fall into the hearts of veterans. Anyone who has fun with them in Arcade or on old consoles will love it.

Niche beginners, on the other hand, need to skip more content.

The work has ten games – in American and Japanese versions – and offers several options in filters and resolutions for players to enjoy the classics, as well as features such as training mode, museum and online play. But, obviously, this is an experience focused on those who have lived or are very involved with similar games. No news.

It should be noted that the Capcom Fighting Collection on the PS5 works in reverse compatibility with the PS4 version – that is, do not expect to interact with DualSense. This is not a game of this generation, but of the previous generation. And this becomes apparent throughout the game.

Capcom Fighting Collection Games

The Capcom Fighting Collection was created to provide an updated experience with additions. To be rich in the content of the collection, ten games were chosen to create the lineup.

Darkstalkers Series

After appearing in Arcades in 1994, the Darkstalkers series has been featured in the Capcom Fighting Collection with some surprises. Two games of the franchise have not been sold outside of Japan, but are included in the collection. Check:

  • Darksstalkers: The Night Warriors
  • Night Warriors: Darkstalkers’ Revenge
  • The savior of the vampire
  • Vampire Hunter 2 – previously unavailable outside of Japan
  • Vampire Savior 2 – previously unavailable outside of Japan

Red Earth

If the Darkstalkers were exclusive to Japan, the situation on Red Earth would be very different. The game has never been released for consoles before, but it will make its debut with a collection outside of Arcade.

Cyberbots: Metal Madness

A fighting game that is different from the others above. Mechanical and combat robots known as Variant Armors.

Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo

Here, those who like the Chibi version of the characters, the more “favorite” performance of the fighters, and are a fan of Street Fighter, feel good about being served. However, the punch exchange only comes out when the puzzles are solved in the corner of the screen.

Hyper Street Fighter II

Hyper Street Fighter II: The Anniversary Edition combines all the characters from previous versions of the franchise. The cast includes fighters from the original Street Fighter II and Super Street Fighter II Turbo.

Super Gem Fighter Mini Mix

Chibs still appear in the collection, however, this is a breakdown of everything between the Street Fighter, Darkstalkers and Red Earth franchises with crossovers – and without the puzzles, the beat came out here.

Capcom Fighting Collection gameplay

Capcom has chosen an interesting way to get back to fighting games. More organized than Capcom Arcade Stadium – mainly in terms of menu and game layout.

The titles in the Capcom Fighting Collection are straightforward and can be used in both US and Japanese versions.

Each game has its own control scheme, but they are fully customizable. Additionally, in the pause menu of certain games – this is activated via DualShock 4 and the DualSense touch panel – it is possible to change some items without having to return to the character selection screen.

Among the available settings, changes between filters leave each artwork the way players prefer to animate them. Either with a more modern look in full screen, or with the original released resolution.

New features make sessions more interesting

Capcom has made the game even more interesting with the online multiplayer mode of these classic games. Yes, you can play casual and rated games in every title in the collection.

In addition to the games having a back up network code – a feature that can improve the response to commands sent to the server – you can watch your friends’ games in spectator mode.

Regarding the quality of the connection, it is impossible to offer a very clear opinion. The reason is simple: in the tests the opponents were clearly not in the same region and some lag was observed.

Training mode

Each game in the Capcom Fighting Collection has training modes that can be accessed differently. While the Street Fighter and Darkstalkers series provide training mode where your commands are displayed on the screen, in Red Earth you can challenge the title bosses.

The Capcom Fighting collection has a corner for older fans

Another resource in the collection is the museum. In this session, the player explores hundreds of official arts, concept art, design documents, and unique materials for fighting games. In addition, 400 songs from the games – including remixes – are waiting for franchise fans.

To improve, while players are queuing for a match, it is possible to study the content in the mode until you find an opponent. The number of attractions can be even greater if you buy the game in advance. Check:

18 music tracks remixed:

  • CAP-JAMS (8 songs)
  • Knxwledge (6 songs)
  • Mndsgn (1 song)
  • KEIZOmachine! (1 song)
  • Olive oil (1 song)
  • Matt Cab (1 song)

No errors during testing

The PS5 experience had no interruptions during the sessions through the backward compatibility. On the other hand, unfortunately, the Capcom Fighting Collection does not allow you to take screenshots without stopping the game – so we chose to show most of the content in the video.

The Capcom Fighting collection does not have enough to win new audiences

Games have a more attractive appearance, responsive controls, and competitive online mode, though that may not be enough to attract a new audience. Reason? Other fighting games on the market, such as Mortal Kombat, Injustice and Capcom’s own Street Fighter V, are more complete.

The delivery of the collection is like a remaster. Is it well done? Yes. But there is nothing innovative to deserve the attention of those who are already busy with other proposals. Nice nostalgia or a different experience for more “real” games nowadays, but it’s true.

Another factor to note is: the menus in the collection are PT-BR, but the games themselves have not got localization for our language – which is a shame.

Capcom Fighting Collection: Worth it?

If you are a fan of classic games, it’s worth it. The collection faithfully delivers the works and adds the necessary resources to improve the quality of life of the games. Have nostalgic fun through the filters or set the multiplayer mode.

For the general public, it is advisable to consult other options in the platform store. The Capcom Fighting Collection caters to young people, but the titles are not as elaborate as the current ones, such as Street Fighter V.

The game will have versions for PS4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and PC (via Steam). The release will be on June 24, 2022.
