Anyone over the age of 40 lovingly celebrates today. Exactly half a century ago, on June 27, 1972, Atari was founded by Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabni in the United States.

The company was named after a move to Go in a Japanese board game, where “Atari” represents the player’s stones, which are at risk of being taken by the opponent. Arcade Pong was the one who started, in arcade format. The main version of the famous electronic table tennis game will be released in three years.

Focusing on home consoles, Atari developed the Atari VCS, later renamed the Atari 2600. It is a video game that has remained in emotional memory and is still fondly remembered for generations. Later, more modern games will be released. All represent the legacy of the present, the fiftieth anniversary.

Arrival of video games in Brazil

Atari arrived in Brazil in September 1983 and was launched by Polyvox, a subsidiary of Gradiente. However, “The number one enemy of the Brazilian family and the best enemy of men” (according to the advertising campaign) was not the first video game in the country. Six years earlier, Filco Ford had pioneered Telejogo, and in the year of its release, Polyvox had competed in the market with Phillips Odyssey.

The success of the console was due to the better price in the market and the massive advertising campaign in Brazil. Atari soon became a national sky-fever, unlike what happened in the United States. We must remember that the game “ET”, which many consider the worst in history, contributed to the collapse of sales in North America, which led to the collapse of the video game industry.

Activision was an excellent partner of Atari. The company has developed and released several classics that have been released for the console, such as Enduro, River Raid, Pitfall, Pac Man, Keystone Kapers (Police and Robber), Seaquest, Frogger and more.

Consolidation in Brazil took place in 1984, when Atari’s play became the opening of a soap opera produced by Globo, in the case of “Transas e Caretas”.

From the second half of the decade, production declined and the console began to surpass the next generations, such as the Sega / Tec Toy Master System, which had an excellent number of sales in the country. However, Polivox was still promoting Atari trade in the early 90’s and the console could be seen in global series such as “Vale Tudo” and “O Salvador da Pátria”.

Almost from bankruptcy to new investments

The Atari 2600 was released worldwide on January 1, 1992. Other attempts by the company such as Atari 5200, Atari 7800, Atari Lynx and Atari Jaguar were not successful. The Atari brand has been purchased many times over the years. It is noteworthy that the company has given rights to other companies for home computer components, consoles and arcade sections.

Atari filed for bankruptcy in 2013 and is currently focusing on the digital segment. The company recently bought the video game database website MobyGames for $ 1.5 million. In this way, it marks the 50th anniversary of the market in search of new consolidation.
