A Microsoft survey reveals the gaming behavior of families at the end of the year

More than half of the respondents consider it interesting to pass on the tradition of the game at the end of the year to new generations.

The year is coming to a close and games are always a good gift. Survey commissioned by Microsoft reveals that 56% of respondents spend their holidays playing video games with their families and passing on the tradition to new generations.

“Among respondents who said they plan to play games during the holiday season, 38% ranked video games in their top 5 family activities,” the survey revealed. According to an Xbox survey (using Xbox Live data), Minecraft and Forza Horizon 5 accounted for more than 50% of titles played on Microsoft platforms by the end of 2021.

Among those surveyed who play video games, 40% say they plan to play with their children, 21% with their parents, 5% with their grandparents, and 10% say they plan to play with close relatives. 56% of respondents say they pass down the fun of video games across generations.

Games are a refuge from the problems of the real world

Games, for many, are an escape from the hassles and hassles of everyday life in the real world. Among respondents, 54% use games to relieve stress compared to other activities such as spending time on social networks (46%), reading a book (45%), exercising (42%) and self-care activities (33%).

Among the wide variety of games on the market, 71% of respondents agree that there are titles that everyone in the family should enjoy, from the youngest to the oldest.

Speaking of generations, two Microsoft franchises recently celebrated several decades of life. Microsoft Flight Simulator (which isn’t really a game) is 40 years old and Age of Empires is 25. Forza Horizon is one of the newest and is already a decade old.

The online survey was conducted by YouGov, at the request of Microsoft, with people aged 13 and over in Germany, Australia, Brazil, the US, Mexico and the UK. More than 1,200 people were interviewed in each country.

“The survey focused on understanding consumer habits and perceptions of video games in relation to other traditions and activities during the holiday season,” said Jerry West, director of marketing for Xbox.
